Biography

Peter Donkersloot (April 8th 1959) was born in Arnhem, The Netherlands. After his study at the Arnhemse Kunstacademie (Art Academy Arnhem) was Peter a freelance illustrator for several publishers and Advertisementbureaus. In his spare time he painted artistic. At the end of 1987 he discovered that work and ambition no longer mixed well together and he forced himself to make a decision.

Peter Donkersloot paints according to the old 'layer over layer' tradition. Transparant layers added over eachother give the paintings more dept and the colors are 'warm'. This can not be reached by colors directly from the tube.
The old masters worked in the same manner with selfmade oilpaint on oil-base. Due to the slow process of drying they had to wait, sometimes even weeks, before they could add an extra layer.
This is the reason why many artists, like Donkersloot, now work with quickly drying acryl (based on water) to achieve the same effects.
Donkersloot also uses silkscreens of painting of old masters, that he coveres completely or partly in order to transform the 'original' to a new modern painting.

Peter Donkersloot about himself

"I have always had the idea that when everything would fail, I could go back in the advertisement business, allthough I knew that would never happen. The nature of art is to show to the public what the artist is doing, about what he dreams or about what keeps him awake. When I recognized that, I knew that I would never return back to my former occupation. Every form of art is being led by the thought 'Lord, who am I that I have to do this?' When you do it right, you will be rewarded by a mature public that gives you a certain status in living. That is the ultimate position for an artist!"

"My ambition was the become the best artist in the world, but a qualification like that does not exist. Nobody can decide that objectively because that are no norms for that. Maybe I am trying to create the ultimate painting, the painting that can not be described by words available. You want to tell something that can not be written in words. There must be a stage where words stop and the painting starts. Beyond doubt it is nonsens to talk about it. If I could explain this the art of painting will be redundant. It is the state of mind that can not be reached with verbal communnication. That is my quest!"

Peter Donkersloot was involved in and gave his name to Gallery Donkersloot, in the PC hoofstraat Amsterdam. Since may 2001 he no ties to the Gallery anymore, and his work is being sold some very well know gallery's around the country.
